Helpful Stroke Recovery Resources for Survivors in the UK and Beyond

Over the past 16 years of living as a stroke survivor, I have come across a wide range of resources that have helped me navigate the challenges of rehabilitation and long-term recovery. This page includes a carefully curated list of stroke support organisations, therapy services, and information hubs that offer trusted advice, practical tools, and community support. Whether you are in the early stages of recovery or further along your journey, these UK-based and international websites may provide the guidance and encouragement you need. Each has played a part in my ongoing healing, and I hope they can help you too.

Here’s a list of both UK-based and international online rehabilitation resources that I’ve found useful during my 16 years of experience as a stroke survivor:

UK-Based Resources

Stroke Association (www.stroke.org.uk) – Provides extensive information, resources, and support for stroke survivors and their families in the UK.
Different Strokes (www.differentstrokes.co.uk) – Offers support, resources, and a community network for younger stroke survivors in the UK.
The Royal College of Occupational Therapists (www.rcot.co.uk) – Offers information on stroke rehabilitation, including resources for occupational therapy and adapting daily activities.
NHS Choices (www.nhs.uk) – Provides information on stroke prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, including exercises and advice for stroke survivors.
Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury (ARNI) (www.arni.uk.com) – Offers resources and information specifically for stroke survivors. Founded by Dr Tom Balchin, a stroke survivor himself. Dr Balchin had his stroke as a young man and offers a unique perspective on post-stroke recovery. He has published several books on the subject, including The Successful Stroke Survivor and Had a Stroke? Now What?
Integrated Neurological Services (INS) (www.ins.org.uk) – INS is the only organisation in the London area offering long-term, professional rehabilitation and support for people with neurological conditions, delivered through its experienced team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and social workers.

Benefits and Work (www.benefitsandwork.co.uk) – UK-based advice website for benefit claimants. In an increasingly hostile political climate, they provide invaluable advice, free guidance, and how-to guides for disabled people for a modest annual subscription.

International Resources

National Stroke Association (www.stroke.org) – Offers information, resources, and support for stroke survivors and caregivers in the United States.
American Stroke Strokes (www.strokeassociation.org) – Provides resources on stroke prevention, treatment, and recovery, including information on rehabilitation..
World Stroke Organization (www.world-stroke.org) – Offers global resources, research updates, and information on stroke rehabilitation and recovery.
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (www.ninds.nih.gov) – Provides resources on stroke rehabilitation, research updates, and clinical trials in the United States.
Bob and Brad (www.bobandbrad.com) – Informal advice, YouTube videos, and a range of quality therapy devices such as massage guns, weights, mats, etc.
Dr Tara Tobias (www.orlandoneurotherapy.com) – Extensive advice and exercise videos on all aspects of neurotherapy, including stroke rehabilitation.
